designjunction 2018

designjunction

Est. 2011 - London

"For 2018 designjunction presents #designevery, a theme celebrating design as one of the most powerful components in our everyday lives. We have looked at four main pillars of #detail #process #moment and #tomorrow to explore the different ways in which design touches our lives. [...] Stirring away from the coveted homogenous names of the design and architecture industry, we're breaking the mould of the ego-driven talk programmes, by opening up a discussion about what truly matters."
- Toria Brook-Hill

Now in its 8th year, designjunction is a leading exhibition of cutting-edge design, bringing together the worlds of architecture, furniture, interior design and lighting, with curated boutique pop-up shops and outdoor installations. For the first time this year, it will take place on London Southbank, a hub of creativity and artistic influences.

Project Manager Toria Brook-Hill very kindly agreed to answer a few questions to tell us more about the event and what makes it a not-to-miss annual destination.

Jeya Narrative: Can you tell us a little about designjunction, what it is all about and what it seeks to achieve?

Toria Brook-Hill: designjunction is London’s leading destination for contemporary interior design and culture, held annually during the London Design Festival in September. designjunction presents more than 200 world-class international brands and smaller cutting-edge design labels to an audience of design professionals (architects, interior designers, retailers and media) as well as consumers. Alongside its core trade brands, designjunction creates a unique visitor experience by curating a host of design led pop-up shops, bespoke installations and ambitious features.

What is the history of the event, why was it created and how has it evolved since its first edition in 2011?

Launched in 2011 by a team of industry experts, designjunction has continued to break the mould of the traditional trade show by presenting more than 200 brands in a series of inspiring and centrally-located venues, building an unparalleled reputation as London’s leading design destination.

Who does designjunction appeal to, and what can visitors expect from it?

designjunction appeals to the design industry in a broad sense from trade to shoppers, established names to aspiring designers. This year we’re building a pavilion right behind the National Theatre – Doon Street – which will be a space for furniture and lighting brands to launch new products. Oxo Tower Wharf will present new ideas and processes in design, as well as our talks programme. Along the River Thames, linking the two spaces, are a series of ambitious outdoor installations.

How do the organisers - you included - keep on top of the industry’s latest trends and developments to make sure designjunction remains fresh and innovative every year? Where do you get your inspiration from?

We’re lucky enough to hear about many new launches before they happen which is a privileged position to be in and helps us to keep on top of the latest trends. We always encourage our exhibitors to push the boundaries with how they present at designjunction which keeps the show undeniably fresh and innovative year on year.

Could you please tell us more about this year’s campaign theme #designevery? How did you decide on it and how does it reflect the industry as a whole?

For 2018 designjunction presents #designevery, a theme celebrating design as one of the most powerful components in our everyday lives. We have looked at four main pillars of #detail #process #moment and #tomorrow to explore the different ways in which design touches our lives. The concept culminates in our Talks Programme with a focus on equality and diversity. The talks programme is diverse, considered and intellectual. Stirring away from the coveted homogenous names of the design and architecture industry, we're breaking the mould of the ego-driven talk programmes, by opening up a discussion about what truly matters.

What advice could you give to somebody who would like to become part of the industry?

It fundamentally comes down to quality and innovation. If you are presenting good quality design in a way that catches people’s attention then you are likely to be successful. Relationships and the energy to maintain them is also critical to the industry – everyone knows everyone!

Are you able to tell us of any show-stoppers or challenges you have surmounted over the years you have worked on designjunction?

Working on an event naturally has its moments but what is most rewarding is overcoming these challenges time and time again to produce what is now an award-winning show with a genuine commitment to its original aims and ambitions.

Why did you select Jeya Narrative to be part of the event; how is it a good fit?

Jeya Narrative is perfect for designjunction as their ethos is centered around good quality design presented in a new and cutting-edge way – this is everything we look for in a designjunction brand.
